Kuala Lumpur – ASWAQ
Sunway Medical Centre now offers the latest Gamma Knife® Icon™ technology for even greater precision to eliminate tumors or lesions in the brain without traditional surgery, giving hope to patients with inoperable or complicated brain conditions.
Sunway Medical Centre has organized health talks events especially for the Arabic community who resides in Klang Valley and attended by 40 people from various countries such as Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran and others. The objectives of the health talks are to create awareness of the features and benefits of the Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon™ technology.
During Gamma Knife treatment, 192 beams of radiation are precisely directed to the brain lesion, damaging the cancer cells and sparing the surrounding tissues. The result is remarkable, where the tumour gradually stops growing and in many instances, disappears over time. So far Sunway Medical Centre is the only centre in Southeast Asia which can perform frameless gamma knife radiosurgery. This means the patients do not need to wear head frame with four screws to hold the frame in place during the treatment which could be uncomfortable to them.
“Gamma Knife ICON technology is more than a technology, it’s a comprehensive solution for patients with Brain tumours and other functional brain disorders. After undergoing Gamma Knife ICON treatment, we have observed significant benefits and reduction in the size of malignant tumours without the worrying side effects of an actual surgery. They are able to resume their daily routine.”, explained Dr. Syed Abdullah Al-Haddad, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Sunway Medical Centre.
Since the launch of Gamma Knife® Icon™ in Sunway Medical Centre in Nov 2017, Sunway Medical Centre has treated 92 cases successfully. Born out of a vision to break the perception that cancer is the end, Sunway Medical Centre’s (SunMed) cancer centre provides a holistic approach towards cancer.
